“A White boy’s fun is a Black boy’s lawlessness.” - Dr. Ibram X. Kendi

4 Corners Yoga +Wellness, hosts, a bi-weekly book club, Candid Conversations, which allows us to explore books on race, social injustice and oppressive practices. We’ve been meeting as a community of social justice investors for almost two and a half years. The work has prompted deep reflection, uncomfortable discourse, and most importantly truths through experiences. Through it all we took time to breathe, honor our collective lived experiences. To acknowledge what was coming up in our body and to handle it with care.

We’ve built relationships and continue to be active participants in moving the needle forward. The screening of the movie TIL, with a reflection and impact discussion is purposeful in our intention to move forward.

The purpose of Session One and Two is to raise social and racial justice awareness. Participants gather to watch the movie, Till; listen, discuss and reflect upon our deeply rooted untold American history. The goal is to raise our collective consciousness about hate and systemic racism. Ways to recognize it in the places we show up in and how to intentionally push back on situations and systems that continue to oppress will be discussed.

Guiding Principles – One might wonder what social justice, dismantling inequity in a racist system and raising collective awareness of these issues, has to do with yoga. Yoga cannot be reduced to only the movement and practice on the mat. It calls for us to bring into union, body, mind and spirit and as a community our experiences interconnect both in the studio and out in the world.

The Yamas which is one of the eight limbs of yoga helps to lead the way and define why this work should be part of our practice as well. These are moral codes of conduct for how we interact with our world, listing non-harming (ahimsa), truthfulness (satya), right use of energy (brahmacharya), non-greed (asteya) and non-attachment (aparigraha) as a start for how we should approach this work and our lives.

Satya (truthfulness) - When we initially thought of this event it was a way of going deeper, of exploring the past and facing the history. We thought of two separate viewings, an affinity group with white participants only at the first event and a joint group with everyone else for the larger discussion.  In the planning stages, one of our members asked, “why not an affinity group for everyone else?”

We took a soft pause.

Our thinking is that it may be difficult for non-white folks to view the movie and “re-live” the harshness and oppression that still plays out today. We thought in that choice we were minimizing the harm (ahimsa). In that moment of questioning, we realize firstly, that we were not being equitable and secondly, we were also taking agency away from each participant to make their own choice to attend the workshop.

Another pause, without strong attachment to our initial idea, we let go of the first and allowed for the second. The event is opened to anyone who is so inclined to collectively view, reflect and discuss the movie “Till”.

We respect that this still may not work for everyone, but we believe that should not mean we sit in indecisive limbo. We are mindfully aware to hold space for positive reflection and hope you will join us for this event.

In our corner of  January (2023!)

Hello everyone,

Here we are, in a new beginning.

We've been reflecting on our goals here in the studio. I know you have, too. Potential and possibility sprout like seeds as the calendar resets and we prepare to take advantage of it. (And, you know, at times feel guilty about it.)

I've spoken with several folks about their goals for the new year and interestingly enough, the majority of individual goals include others.

Would you believe that? It seems to be that starting off the new year right is almost as important as starting off the new year together.

We simply do better when we're together.

We're hardwired for community, we crave it, we are encouraged by it, and we're better for it.

Goals achieved, goals attempted, or no goals at all, I wish one thing for you and that is community.

Hold your people close.

I'll see you in the studio, where there is always community for you.

Up and Coming Workshops:
ABOUT Bond Building

Tiffany Hogan (instructor, 4CYW) teaches you and your partner how to breathe together and flow on the mat. Couples yoga, or partner yoga, is a practice in which two people support each other through gentle poses in a way that enhances posture, builds trust and strengthens communication.

A partner often provides balance in a pose while establishing and maintaining proper body alignment themselves. Find your breath together on the mat, watch ease and balance bloom in your relationship off the mat.

Bring your +1 (partner, friend, sibling, parent) to this connective, invigorating workshop.

“Hi, I'm Tiffany! I'm a life-long student of yoga.”

“ Yoga has transformed my life and my health, and now I'm committed to helping other people experience that.

I feel so connected to 4CYW because this is the community I grew up in, these are the people I grew up with. I love introducing yoga as a practice of comfort for all body types, experience levels, and abilities.

That's also why I love teaching Mixed Levels. Community means coming together exactly as you are. I love meeting people where they're at, and I love the people I get to meet. â€

Help us congratulate Tiffany on her champagne anniversary, 4 years at 4 Corners YW!
